Reception for In the Artists Studio
Start: June 21, 2013 End: June 21, 2013According to Paul Schulenburg, "One of biggest challenges an artist can confront is depicting the human form. Painting, drawing and sculpture allows for many types of stylistic interpretation, but really trying to capture the essence of gesture and the personality of facial expression can be a frustrating pursuit. Like learning to play a musical instrument, drawing, painting and sculpting must be practiced in order to achieve any degree of facility of craft. For that reason, I made arrangements to meet with other artists in my studio on a regular basis to practice working from a live model. Artists and art schools have done this for centuries, and still continue this practice. In doing this at my studio I am able to make sure I can get in my painting time with the added benefit of maintaining a social connection with like-minded artists. "
The almost two dozen artists represented include some of the Capes most well-known artists as well as several emerging artists. Steve Kennedy said, "Both professional and lay artists who paint ‘for the fun of it’ have been invited to participate in Pauls group. Sessions at the Schulenburg studio are held weekly, year round and sometimes twice in one day (known at the studio as "doing a double"). Different models are invited weekly to keep the challenge of interpreting the figure fresh. Some artists work on small almost hyper-realistic paintings; others favor large energetic canvases to be finished in their own studios. Some work in a modernistic style with fauvist color, others aim for a classical feel. The styles are eclectic, as varied as the personalities of the artists themselves."
Participating artists include Laurie Balliett, Shawn Dahlstrom, Sally Bassett Dickeson, Maryalice Eizenberg, Taylor Fox, Jerome Greene, Lila Seveda Grilli, Steve Kennedy, Kely Knowles, Robert LaPointe, Ron Lindholm, Terry Lindholm, Peg LoPresto, Susan OBrien McLean, Rosalie Nadeau, Karen Ojala, Susan Overstreet, Andrea L.
